I’v Been Vegucated

818776_s_VLast night I took the time to watch Vegucated, an informative and very inspirational documentary on the effects of being Vegan. Now, I love my meats and cheeses. In fact, right before I watched the movie I finished off some bacon! But, the film got to me on various levels. The effect on your health, cruelty to animals, and the effect on the earth. One of these three factors is bound to stick with you between the proven data, the honest visuals, and/or the great illustrations.

The film walks you through three individuals journeys of the possibility of a vegan lifestyle. Making it easy for you to in vision yourself taking these steps. What I like best about the film is the understanding that it is a huge change for many people and if going cold turkey is not your approach, it is just as good to just try to limit your intake. If everyone just consumed LESS animal products it would make a world of a difference!

I will be making the conscious effort to reach for the veggie burger!

Running Wild: In The Cold

womanrunningonsnowDon’t let the cold weather keep you from running. Here is a no excuse list of tips to keep you warm during your winter pick ups!

A good point of reference is to dress as if it’s 20 degrees warmer outside than it really is. What might feel like a chilly start will soon be a warm workout. So don’t over dress. Follow this gear list.

winter run

Head – 40% of your body heat is lost through your head. So in cold weather cover your noggin. Most likely a thin beanie will do. Don’t forget lip balm/vaseline and sunscreen.

Shoulders – Base layer should be a snug synthetic wicking material that don’t absorb as much as cotton. Warmth layer should be a loose-fitting technical top that will wick moisture away. The most important layer is the protective shell. A water proof jacket that will protect you from wind, rain and snow. Jackets with zip off sleeves or armpit vents help when you overheat but keep your body core warm.

Knees – Your legs won’t loose as much body heat as the rest of your body so for most winter days one pair of long running leggings will do.

Toes & Fingers – Warm socks and gloves are a given. %30 of your body heat escapes from your phalanges. For fingers simple, or not so simple pair of gloves or mittens will do. And for feet a wool blend sock will help you keep warm especially when it’s soggy.

Tips: Windy day! Run into the wind first so when your sweaty and could catch a chill the wind is pushing you home. During dawn and dusk or even dark days have a reflector strip somewhere in your ensemble.

Gear: It doesn’t all have to be name brand running gear. This is what I wear and it gets the job done!  Generic Beanie $5. Waterproof Jacket Marmot $75. Leggings North Face $85. Thin Layer Fila $20. Uniqlo Vest $40. SmartWool Sock $8. Asics Gloves $17.

Food Matters: You are what you eat.

We have all heard it before. You are what you eat. And most everyone agrees with this statement, but many of us won’t do a thing about it. Last night I was on the edge of my seat watching “Food Matters” a documentary about the lack of nutrition in our society and in most of our lives.

It is a must watch! Producer-Directors James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten Bosch do an amazing job illustrating how are society accepts medicines with open arms but criticizes and ignores the simple solution to most of our problems … to eat right, to eat raw.

Even though I have heard it before (you are what you eat) this film opened my eyes and has made me reconsider my next bacon, egg, and cheese.

I would love to hear what you thought of the film!

Go Fish

My first true experience fishing was so much more than I expected and something everyone should try once in their lifetime. Up at 5AM, on the water for sunrise, and my first Sea Bass by 7:30AM, I felt a live! For the first time I saw fishing in a whole new light. As an art, a sport, and a beautiful way to relax. By end of day I had learned a lot and was completely satisfied with the effort I had put into the day and the aches muscles that followed the next morning.

Ironman Inspiration

This weekend my best friend will be competing in the IRONMAN triathlon in Lake Placid, NY. Take a moment to understand that she will be doing a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike and a marathon 26.2-mile run. They happen all over the world. Be inspired this weekend and fit in a workout this weekend or sign up for a competition so you can train with a goal in mind.

AM Light

I consider myself a morning person, but most the time I’m just up, not out of bed. The days when I actually take the time to enjoy my breakfast outside, go for an am run, or take a longer walk to work I am in a great mood! So why don’t I do it everyday?

(image from Pia Jane Bijkerk)

According to the article I read in Yoga Journal AM light is doing exactly that…It helps fight depression, insomnia, cognitive slowdown, and other aging related illnesses. With as little as 20 minutes of morning glory a day you can see results. It’s the blue-spectrum in morning sunlight that helps syncs your body to your brain’s internal clock. So whether your a morning person or not roll out of bed and soak up the sun early!

Roll On

My saving grace, the poor mans personal masseuse, the reason I made it past many finish lines, and now my personal trainer, ladies and gentlemen, the Foam Roller. If you want to improve on sore muscles, flexibility, range of motion, balance, or stretching (if you haven’t already) go out and buy one today! If your still don’t think it’s worth the money then try a large diameter PVC pipe, squash balls, tennis balls, or even a Nalgene type water bottle wrapped in a towel. But I promise you, will be much happier with the foam.

Read on how to use the foam roller!

Tan Towel

(image via island tan)

Tanning is always a hot topic. This is my spin on it. Get your 20 min to an hour a day. You need that vitamin D. Wrinkles will happen, but there is no use in rushing the process. As I get older I don’t regret my lifeguarding days, but I am definitely conscious of taking care of my skin now. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE laying out in the sun and when it comes to my family sun bathing is practically a hobby, but now I do

it with sun block and hats. With my family vacation coming up I am preparing myself, to yet again, being the palest of them all. But I have finally found a great product that allows me to have just enough color. This way I can enjoy my time on the beach and not hurt anyones eyes in the process. Giving a shout out to..Tan Towel.

I buy the full body pack for ($25-$18) you can also purchase half body too.

My suggested instructions for the best tan:

1. Buy some thin plastic gloves, because they don’t come with. Or wash your fingers immediately after each process.

2. Open up the towelette and start in a large surface area. Belly or thigh. Towel is most saturated and it will be a mistake to start at your feet.

3. Focus on all the locations where you usually are getting the most sun. This way it seems most natural.

4. Then start at the face and work your way down the whole body getting every inch. NOW WAS YOUR FINGERS.

5. IMPORTANT. Immediately use body lotion on your whole body and face. This should smooth out any areas you may have missed. NOW WASH YOUR HANDS AGAIN.

The this process and my towels have not failed me yet!

Out With the Old & In With the New

( image via Janie Osborne for The New York Times )

Out with the old … Just like a new haircut, dress, or manicure, the something new, can spark motivation you’ve been lacking … something new can do the same for your workout. As a long time runner, I know when it’s time to get a new pair of running shoes (after 350+ miles) but sometimes a new pair of kicks is all I need to get me back in gear. Overtime I have collected a beautiful collection of sneakers and my emotional attachment to them and their achievements make it hard to just throw them out. So … I have decided to look into ways to pay it forward and/or recycle my sneaks. You should do the same!

Shoe4Africa.org (gently used shoes only) – Shoes are sent to Kenya to help prevent hookworm and organize races to promote a healthy lifestyle.

One World Running (gently used shoes only) – Shoes are donated to those in need and around the world to promote a healthy lifestyle. They also organize 5k walk/runs.

Nike Reuse a Shoe (whats acceptable for recycle) – Shoes are recycled into Nike Grind Rubber, Foam, and Fiber which all contribute to new gym flooring, tracks, or courts. You can even create your own charity drive with Nike.

In with the new … Ready to be motivated with new pair of spunky shoes! Providing you with no excuses to get off your ass and workout!  This month Women’s Health Magazine featured a great guide to help you find the perfect fit! Need more help? Always get help from your local running store and if not their expertise than any sports store should do!

Tip: If you don’t have the money to spend but your still in need of a new shoe … You don’t need this seasons latest. Most the time their isn’t much different between the two except the new seasons colors.

Go get em!
